Shanghai Permanent traffic madness

gepostet am 05. March 2010 um 09:28

Shanghai is a city of 16 million people, and it continues to grow. The city comes to life at about 5 a.m. and that\'s when the traffic also starts - and what traffic! The air is dreadful, and on some days so bad that you can hardly see the sun, just the glimmer of a large red ball in the sky, dulled by the air pollution...

… Interestingly, unlike other cities of this size, Shanghai is not working flat out around the clock; from 10 p.m. it\'s quiet and dark. Street lighting and the lights from innumerable skyscrapers are simply switched off in the evening. The nightlife, too, is restricted to just a few points and the metro doesn\'t run after 11 p.m. However, getting a taxi is never a problem! Those who want to escape from the traffic have to leave the city, because there are only a few green spaces and parks. But the flight to the surrounding countryside at the weekend isn\'t easy, because there are unbelievable traffic jams and it takes 2-4 hours to really reach the countryside! An acquaintance said to me: \"It is simpler to fly to the Philippines for the weekend than to drive in the car to the countryside.\"
