Alternative Energy A top subject in Shanghai

gepostet am 15. March 2010 um 20:36

The subject of electricity and energy is really huge in China. It is treated very ambivalently: on the one hand, very advanced concepts in energy generation and use are being developed, and on the other, they are unbelievably wasteful with energy. So there\'s the unbelievable extravagance of media facades, the staging of buildings, laser shows, etc., which are enormously energy intensive.

On the other hand, the EXPO site, in particular, is exemplary when it comes to alternative energy use. There are only electric vehicles: both small, personal forms of transport and public transport. The buses that run on the site are charged by induction in the bus stops. Lots of solar energy is being used, which surprises me, because it appears to have been raining continuously since we\'ve been here...

The subject of electricity is not only apparent on the EXPO site but in every city, in the form of electric scooters and bicycles used for people to get about. As you can\'t hear these electric vehicles, you have to be really careful as a pedestrian not to get run over. It\'s greatly different from the loud rattling of mopeds in other Asian cities! The batteries of these electric vehicles are then simply taken indoors and recharged at the socket. This may explain why lights are turned off in the evening, because the power is being used for millions of batteries.
